The Volumes were an R&B group from Detroit.
Whilst performing in Toronto, Canada, they were spotted by the owner of Chex Records, Willie Ewing, who signed them into his label, Chex Records.

They Volumes in 1962, with the song ‘I Love You’ b/w ‘Dreams’, which reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The single realised a 12 week stay on that particular chart.
The song was penned by group member Ernest Newsom, along with the group’s manager, Willie Ewing.
Further sides were released on the Chex and American Arts imprints.
The Volumes switched labels to the Jubilee Records imprint in 1963, which was a shortlived stay before a further move to Old Town Records the same year.
By 1964 they had relocated again to American Arts Records, where they released ‘Gotta Give her Love’ B/W ‘I Can’t Live Without You’.
An earlier Chex single, ‘Come Back Into My Heart’ b/w ‘The Bell’, featured Lamont Dozier playing drums.
By 1968, The Volumes had been merged into the Motown label by Berry Gordy.
In 1970, The Volumes had departed the Motown stable, and signed to the Ann Arbor imprint.

There they released one single for the Karen Records subsidiary entitled 'Ain't Gonna Give You Up b/w 'Am I Losing You'.
The Volumes disbanded in 1971, with Ernie Newsome joining the group The Fantastic Four.
