Gwen Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and raised in Newark, New Jersey.

She studied classical music, and her father taught her piano when she was eight years old.

In the Seventies, Gwen sang with The Ebonettes and the Matchmakers.

Gwen also worked as an elementary school teacher.

She sang background vocals (with Cissy Houston) on Aretha Franklin's song 'I'm In Love'.

Her biggest hit came with the dancer 'There's Nothing Going On But the Rent' in 1985.

Gwen passed away from uterine cancer in 1999, when she was only 48 years old.
