J.J.Barnes was born in Detroit and has seven brothers and one sister.
He was educated at the North Western High School in Detroit.
His first professional appearance was in Cincinnatti, Ohio in 1961, where he shared the bill with Aretha Franklin, The Miracles, Luther Barnes and the Emeralds and the Ohio Players.
Hist first recording was 'Won't You Let Me Know' on the McKays imprint.
Over the years, J.J. has recorded for the Golden World, Ric Tic, Motown, Revilot / Groovesville, Volt Leo, Magic Touch, Perception, Contempo and Natural Sounds labels.
